What is Plated Jewelry?
Plated jewelry is made of a base metal coated with a thin layer of another metal. A piece of jewelry can be plated with rose or yellow gold, palladium, rhodium (white), or other metals. Common base metals include sterling silver, copper, and brass. Regardless of the base metal, you should store and clean plated jewelry the same way.
At Véronique Roy Jwls, we use sterling silver as the base metal for our plated jewelry to minimize the risk of allergic reactions and ensure high-quality craftsmanship.
Types of Plating Thickness
Plating comes in different thicknesses. The cheapest option, often called flash plating, is so thin that the jewelry is dipped in the plating solution for just an instant. Flash plating is common in fashion jewelry but is not very durable.
The thicker plating, known as vermeil, is measured in microns. It is more durable and frequently used in Canada and the United States. At Véronique Roy Jwls, we use one-micron plating for our earrings and necklaces and two-micron plating for our rings. This ensures a lasting finish and a colour that closely resembles solid gold.
Why Does My Skin React to Gold-Plated Jewelry?
A common reason for skin reactions is contact with the base metal underneath the plating. To prevent the base metal from oxidizing, a thin layer of another metal is applied under the gold plating. However, as the gold plating wears off over time, your skin may come into contact with the base metal, causing irritation or allergies.
At Véronique Roy Jwls, we do not plate the posts of earrings to avoid skin reactions and prioritize your comfort.
How to Care for Gold-Plated Jewelry
Plated jewelry is more delicate than non-plated pieces due to the thin layer of metal. Proper care can extend its lifespan and keep it looking beautiful.
Tips for Caring for Your Plated Jewelry:
-
Store Separately: Place your jewelry in small airtight bags (like Ziploc bags) and store them in an airtight container. This prevents exposure to humidity and air, which can speed up oxidation.
-
Avoid Humidity: Never wear plated jewelry in the shower, pool, or spa, and remove it before washing dishes or engaging in activities that may cause sweating.
-
Apply Products First: Use hair and skin products, including perfume, before putting on your jewelry. Let the products dry completely to avoid direct contact with the plating.
-
Clean After Use: Gently clean your jewelry with a soft cloth to remove dirt and dust. This helps maintain its shine.
What to Do If Your Jewelry Darkens
-
Gently rub the jewelry with a soft cloth in a circular motion.
-
Use a damp cloth with a 50/50 mixture of water and rubbing alcohol to clean, then dry and polish with a microfiber cloth.
-
Dissolve mild dish soap in water, clean the jewelry with a sponge or soft cloth, then dry and polish thoroughly.
Avoid These Products:
-
Silver Polishing Cloths: These contain chemicals that can remove the plating.
-
Silver or Metal Cleaners: Powders and acids in these products can damage the plating.
-
Abrasive Brushes: Hard bristles or metal brushes can scratch and wear away the plating.
